Open to youth aged 15-25\, materials and snacks are provided during the workshop. \nKnowing what choices and sacrifices are reasonable or unreasonable in the arts is difficult when working with little experience to compare it to. In this workshop\, participants will be brought together for a collective conversation about the difficulties of deciding what personal\, financial\, and/or ethical lines are flexible\, and which need to be held firmly. Join us as we use an intersectional justice lens to navigate how to protect ourselves and each other while working in a flawed system which so often depends on our concessions. \nReservations are required for this event and all materials will be provided. DESCRIPTION:The Conversation will be a unique gathering for people from diverse walks of life. It will be a great opportunity after the Pandemic to get together and explore how we connect with or disconnect from others who are different from us. How do we work in tandem with others? How do we listen and discuss respectfully in order to collaborate on a project? In our polarized world\, how do we respond to extreme positions nudging against each other? \nThe Conversation will be an opportunity for participants to share\, create\, play and connect. Different activities led by facilitator\, poet and visual artist Nadia Chaney will guide the group to create a sense of trust to create community. Nadia will use wisdom and humour to draw a path for the day to evolve. Visual artist Marisa Gallemit will share aspects of her path in art making. SUMMARY:Mandala Spotlight | Unveiling Mandala on Stage
DESCRIPTION:The Council is thrilled to announce our Mandala Spotlight event\, Unveiling Mandala on Stage\, taking place on September 9th at the Ottawa Art Gallery! \nAs part of the Mandala Project\, this evening features an enthralling showcase of IBPOC (Indigenous\, Black\, and People of Color) artists\, celebrating their rich contributions to Ottawa’s performing arts and music scene. This event is a testament to the diversity and creativity within Ottawa’s IBPOC community\, offering a captivating array of genres that span from hip-hop and folk to classical and spoken word poetry. \nDoors open at 4 PM. The showcase is approximately 3 hours in length\, and artist merchandise will be on sale after the show. Food and drinks will not be served at the event\, but bottled water is available by donation\, and all are encouraged to use the OAG’s water refilling stations. Alcohol is not permitted. \nUnveiling Mandala on Stage is a pay-what-you-can event. Donations will focus on another year of celebrating IBPOC performing arts. SUMMARY:Graffiti and Murals in Public Space: An Artist Talk with Kalkidan Assefa and Jimmy Baptiste
DESCRIPTION:Floor 1 – Mackenzie King Lobby / Plaza \nJoin us for a spot talk with mural artists Jimmy Baptiste and Kalkidan Assefa as they discuss mural-making\, their artistic practice\, and their latest work at the OAG in the context of 83 ’til Infinity. Focusing on graffiti and murals in Public Space\, this talk will be covering topics ranging from legality\, illegality\, race\, class\, politics\, permits\, potentials\, and community\, and will be followed by a Q&A with the artists. \n  \n  \nKalkidan Assefa aka DRPN Soul is an Ethiopian-born multidisciplinary painter and certified Artist-Educator specializing in public art.  \nWith 20+ years of producing work in acrylics and aerosol\, Kalkidan is a founding member of the Ottawa Black Arts Kollective (OBAK) and former Visual Arts & Mural Co-ordinator for House of PainT Urban Arts Festival. Being a resident of the unceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory known as Ottawa since 1988\, Kalkidan embraced hip hop at an early age\, recognizing a sense of familiarity and connection with his own artwork and the culture’s roots in African diasporic traditions reimagined in the contemporary context. \nKalkidan’s mural work often focuses on taking up and reclaiming space\, and as a community-based artist he facilitates accessibility to mural projects using an approach that centers cultural authenticity\, decolonial values\, and upliftment through the collaborative process.  \n\n\nJimmy Baptiste is an accomplished graffiti artist\, muralist\, and art facilitator currently residing in Wakefield\, Quebec. With over 20 years of professional experience\, he has honed his skills in illustration\, design\, mural creation\, and community outreach art.  \nIn his capacity as an art facilitator\, Jimmy excels in leading engaging and educational workshops that encourage creative participation within the community. His adeptness extends to diverse projects\, including mural art\, installations\, and curated endeavors\, all of which resonate with his audiences.   \nThrough his company Atelier Dopamine\, Jimmy’s commitment to community engagement is evident through his impactful public art installations\, spanning educational institutions\, community centers\, and institutions. By providing insightful guidance while fostering artistic freedom\, he expertly contributes to both personal and communal artistic expression.  \nAdept at conceptualization and project execution\, Jimmy consistently integrates dynamic content that appeals to a wide range of backgrounds and age groups. His work not only inspires but also educates\, making art an accessible and enriching experience for all.

Taking place in the gallery space\, these talks will begin with a chat about the mural currently being created in the exhibition 83 ’til Infinity\, followed by a conversation about the process and procedure of mural-making as activism and resistance and the importance of graffiti in public spaces.  \nDrop in and join us for one or both sessions\, each followed by a Q&A period in the gallery.  \nSchedule  \n5pm – Hear more about the piece that Mique Michelle and Lindsay Machinski are in the process of creating in the context of the exhibition 83 ’til Infinity  \n5:45pm – Q&A   \n6pm – Learn more the process and procedure of mural-making as activism and resistance and the importance of graffiti in public spaces\, followed by a Q&A  \n6:45pm – Q&A  \n\nMique Michelle is a Franco-Ontarian\, originally from West Nipissing with the goal of abolishing the negative stereotypes towards graffiti. She uses graffiti as a way to create awareness about the oppression that visible and invisible minorities face and to ensure that youth and the communities she visits have the tools to share their messages. And of course\, to add some colour to the world!  \nGraffiti artist Mique Michelle has created more than 60 murals in Ottawa and has exhibited in galleries\, community venues\, etc. Her art has led her to travel all over the world. Notably\, her work includes the façade of the ByTowne Cinema in Ottawa\, the Inspire Festival in Moncton and the Marché des Arts du Spectacle in Abidjan (Ivory Coast) in 2020.

DESCRIPTION:OAG’s Learning and Engagement team offers “Art Talk” phone calls in partnership with The Good Companions Seniors’ Centre and other seniors’ organizations.   \nWe chat about art in OAG exhibitions\, the featured artists\, their lives\, and how their experiences have informed their work. DESCRIPTION:Weekly art and wellness workshops for mental health  \nJoin us on Zoom for a creative workshop with Gallery Educator Abigail Kashul. The workshops aim to foster holistic wellness by providing multidisciplinary creative exploration in an open and supportive environment.  \nZoom link\nFrom September to May\, we’ll be working with mono printing and mixed media drawing techniques to create richly layered artworks on primed canvas in preparation for our exhibition in May\, for mental health awareness month.  \nWe are pleased to offer limited spaces to the public to participate in our Creative Space Online program. DESCRIPTION:Doodles into Art \nJoin us every last Thursday of the month in the Studio to learn observational sketching techniques at the Ottawa Art Gallery. \nUsing continuous lines\, we will create an intricate composition that will become a flock of birds\, a school of fish\, a kaleidoscope of butterflies. We will use colour pencils and soft pastels to give colour to the final contours of the shapes. The end result will look something like a stained-glass composition. \nThe workshop will be led by OAG Educator Maria Gomez-Umaña\, a mixed media artist living in Ottawa whose artwork draws from experiences of becoming and belonging in a globalised world. \nSpots are available on a first come first served basis. DESCRIPTION:The Ottawa Art Gallery is honored to be the host venue for 24hr Yogapalooza 2023\, sponsored by Tony Graham Automotive Group and Trend Micro! \nFor the 6th consecutive year\, 24hr Yogapalooza will once again be raising money for childhood cancer care and research at CHEO. They have raised over $260\,000 in the first five years of the event and they are excited to keep that momentum growing as they challenge participants to 24-hours of yoga over two days in 2023. \nThe first 12 hours of yoga will take place on Saturday\, September 30 from 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM\, followed by the remaining 12 hours on Sunday\, October 1 from 8:00 AM – 8:00PM. Participants can choose to participate hour-by-hour (so you can come and go as you please)\, or challenge yourself to a full 24-hour yoga marathon!
