SUMMARY:Screening: We Lend a Hand: The Forgotten Story of Ontario Farmerettes
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 1 PM \n \nScreening (49 mins.)\, Alma Duncan Salon level 3\n*English presentation with French subtitles\n \n Please note\, this screening is free\, but registration is required.\nREGISTER HERE \nThis screening is part of an OAG Programming Day and will be followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion on the topic of Women in Agriculture in relation to the OAG’s exhibition Faith Fyles: In Full Bloom. Moderated by Robin Etherington\, this panel will feature artist Barbara Brown\, historian Dr. Stacey Barker\, and farm owner and manager Jessica Weatherhead.  \nBonnie Sitter’s book Onion Skins and Peach Fuzz: Memories of Ontario Farmerettes will also be available to purchase.  \nWe Lend a Hand: The Forgotten Story of Ontario Farmerettes is a documentary film that tells the extraordinary story of 40\,000 teenage girls who volunteered on Canadian farms and helped to win the Second World War.\n \n1940. It is a time of national emergency. Hitler’s army ruthlessly sweeps Western Europe. In face of invasion\, Britain suffers devastating bombing raids. The U-Boats wreak havoc in the Atlantic. Desperate food shortages seem to foreshadow imminent invasion. The Old World seeks help from the New. \n2018. Bonnie Sitter\, an author based in Exeter\, Ontario searches through some of her family photographs. She finds a captivating little black and white image: a group of smiling young women on the running board of a vehicle. When she flips the photo\, an intriguing caption reads: “Farmerettes 1946”. This moment sparks a compelling research journey that eventually leads her to co-author an entire book on a forgotten subject. \nTold from Bonnie’s perspective\, We Lend a Hand: The Forgotten Story of Ontario Farmerettes\, reveals the true and forgotten story of the Ontario Farmerettes – 40\,000 teenage girls who volunteered to work on farms between 1941 and 1952. Arriving from different parts of Ontario and Quebec to many locations in Southwestern Ontario\, the young women began this challenge with no prior farming experience. Their job: to ensure critical food production during the most perilous period of modern history. This remarkable contingent of young women were called upon to replace the men on Canadian farms; and they helped the Allies to win the Second World War. \nThrough reenactments and unique archival images\, We Lend a Hand recounts the heartwarming story of these magnificent young women\, now in their late 90s\, bringing back their most cherished memories while reminding us – perhaps for the last time – that service comes in many forms. \n

SUMMARY:Firestone Day: Art + Tea @ the OAG
DESCRIPTION:Warm up with a day of art\, conversation\, and tea. \nThis year’s Firestone Day: Art + Tea at the OAG launches the OAG’s cultural celebrations recognizing Ottawa’s 200th. It sets the stage for a year of exhibitions\, events\, and cultural activations that explore what 200+ years of Ottawa means today\, while also acknowledging the much deeper history of this land that extends well beyond the bicentennial.  \nMarking a particularly fascinating chapter in the city’s story\, we turn our attention to the Kanata–Beaverbrook neighbourhood\, a community known for its artist-named streets and strong ties to Canada’s post-war history. Anchored in the exhibition Visions and Views: Landscape and Abstraction in the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art\, the program explores the Firestone Collection’s connections to this unique neighbourhood\, inviting audiences to consider how Ottawa’s evolving identity has been influenced by both artists and urban design.   \nFirestone Day is a gallery-wide celebration. Before settling in for Art + Tea\, explore a full schedule of activities\, including a special Winterlude edition of Creative Sundays\, a Firestone Gallery Spot Talk\, the OAG Shop Mini-Market\, and a social mixer for OAG XO Members. \nREGISTER HERE \nSchedule of Events  \nSpecial Edition Winterlude Creative Sundays Workshop\n10 AM – 2 PM  \nJoin us in the Studio (level 0) for a free drop-in family art activity. Get inspired by the artworks of Automatistes painters like Marcelle Ferron as you experiment with palette knifes to create snowflakes. All materials will be provided. \n \nFirestone Drop In\n10 AM – 1 PM  \nVisit the Firestone Gallery (level 2) to chat with an educator about the works on view in our current exhibition Visions and Views: Landscape and Abstraction in the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art!  \nOAG Mini Market: Valentine’s Edition\n12 PM – 5 PM  \nVisit the OAG Shop’s first 2026 Mini Market: Valentine’s Edition\, featuring handmade goods by talented Ottawa artists (level 1).  \nSpot Talk\n12 PM – 12:30 PM  \nStop by the Firestone Gallery (level 2) for a Spot Talk with OAG Assistant Curator Amy Wallace to learn more about outdoor painting in the Ottawa-Gatineau region through the work of Group of Seven member A.
