1) What is LE PARTY?

One of Ottawa’s premier, social events, LE PARTY is a silent art auction featuring works by over 65 regional artists, from emerging to established. The auction attracts hundreds of guests who have a taste for local art and food. Your ticket price also includes food and drink samples generously provided by a selection of the city’s finest restaurants and breweries and distillers. As the OAG’s signature fundraising event for twenty-one years, the auction has helped raise a significant part of the Gallery’s overall exhibition and educational programming.

2) When and where will it be held?

The art auction will be held on the evening of November 8, at 6:30 p.m. (general admission time) at the Ottawa Art Gallery’s Alma Duncan Salon at 10 Daly Avenue.

3) Who are the participating artists?

Over 65 Ottawa-area artists, emerging to established, are selected by a committee of their peers to participate in the Art Auction. We thank our committee Petra Halkes, Rebecca Basciano and Mélanie Myers for their participation in this year’s artist selection.

4) How are artists selected for the event?

Artists are selected through a peer-based selection process. The selection committee is responsible for developing the list of artists to invite each year by carefully considering the list of previous participants. A number of artists are invited to participate in the auction, based on the strength of their previous sales. The committee is then responsible for bringing new names to the fore, based on their knowledge of other artists currently practicing in the Ottawa-area.

This selection committee is coordinated by the OAG’s Curatorial Assistant, Rebecca Basciano, and is comprised of diverse, regional artists and arts administrators who have past experience and familiarity with the auction, but do not participate in the auction while also serving on the committee. These artists generally serve on the committee for a maximum of two years. We are grateful to artists Martin Petra Halkes, Rebecca Basciano and Mélanie Myers for being on the 2018 selection committee.

The committee’s selection process is guided by the following principles:

• To balance established and mid-career artists while keeping an eye out for emerging talent;
• To demonstrate a cross-section of the traditional and new fine art disciplines prevalent in the community;
• To reflect our community’s ethnic and linguistic diversity.

5) What kind of artwork will be available?

The Art Auction selection committee does its best every year to include artists practicing in a variety of media. They range from painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and printmaking, to fashion design, mixed media, jewelry, and still photographs from film, performance works and installations.

6) How much are tickets and where can I buy them?

There are two ticket options available: 

Art Lovers ($175) 

For those who want to bid or buy early, we offer an Art Lovers ticket for $150. It includes:

• Admission for one (1) to the Art Lovers Reception, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
• Early bidding and Buy It Now, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
• An exclusive, intimate opportunity to meet and mingle with participating artists
• A silent auction bidding number
• Cocktails and several courses of hors d'œuvres from Ottawa's best food and drink providers

Individual ($100)

• Admission for one (1), starting at 6:30 p.m.
• A silent auction bidding number
• Cocktails and several courses of hors d'œuvres from Ottawa's best food and drink providers

Where to buy: When you purchase tickets before October 20, they will be mailed to you for safe keeping. Any tickets purchased after October 20 will be available for pick-up at the door before the event. To purchase a ticket, and obtain a bidding number, you can do so in one of the following ways:

7) How does it all work?

LE PARTY  is a silent art auction. Here is how it works:

Each ticket includes a bidding number, which you need to place a bid.

With your ticket in hand, write your bidding number next to your bid on the bid-sheets mounted on the wall beside each artwork.

When you purchase tickets before October 20, they will be mailed to you for safe keeping. Any tickets purchased afterwards will be available for pick-up at the door before the event.

Artworks are on display in three zones: the OAG Skylounge, the Alma Duncan Salon outer perimeter, and the Alma Duncan Salon interior perimeter make up the three zones. The galleries close at different times throughout the evening. Closing times are announced by gallery attendants 15 minutes in advance.

8) What is Buy It Now?

When you fall in love with a work of art, sometimes you just have to buy it now. That’s why we’ve introduced the Buy It Now option, which allows you to immediately purchase any work on auction, at market value. Nearly 20% of the artworks are purchased through the Buy It Now feature.

Art Lovers can Buy It Now starting at 5 p.m. at the Art Lovers Reception. This is a full hour and a half before regular ticketholders are admitted to the auction.

9) I noticed some artworks marked with pink stars last year. What does that mean?

LE PARTY is proud to include Critics’ Choice, an initiative first introduced in order to highlight the high caliber of work on auction. The pink star indicates one of five choices made by a panel of local art experts. 

10)  How much money will be raised at the event?

Our goal is to raise $150,000 in oder to keep OAG programs and exhibitions free of charge to the public.

11)  How will OAG use the funds raised?

Funds raised at the OAG Art Auction are used to support the Gallery’s overall operations of educational and exhibition programming. The Gallery's programs explore a variety of programs and include exhibitions, talks, lectures, tours, drop-in workshops and publications.

As Ottawa’s municipal gallery, the Ottawa Art Gallery is the only public art gallery that collects and contextualizes artworks pertaining to the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

12)  How are the proceeds divided between the artists and the OAG?

As the designated municipal gallery in Ottawa, the OAG’s mandate hinges on the success and recognition of Ottawa-Gatineau regional artists and visual art in our region. As such, we take care to ensure that artists who participate in OAG’s Art Auction have two options: 

a) They are welcome to donate their commission to the Gallery’s programs, in exchange for a tax receipt for 100 per cent of the appraised value of their artwork, or,
b) They may receive a commission of 45 per cent.

13)  I’m not able to attend the event. Can I still contribute to the Ottawa Art Gallery?
