Amrita Sher-Gil(1913-1941) was born in Budapest in to a Sikh aristocrat father, and a Hungarian opera singer mother. As a teenager she moved to Florence and Paris to study art, then moved to India in 1934. By the end of her short life, she was painting peasant women with a fluid naturalism and an earthy palette -- unheard of in India at that time. She exposed her own sensuality through a series of bold self-portraits and nudes. Sher-Gil had a unique style,  for which she has been called one of the greatest avant-garde women artists of the early 20th century and a pioneer in modern Indian art. Paramjit Rai will give a lecture on the remarkable life, work and enduring influence of Amrita Sher-Gil.
