In 2026, Ottawa marks a major milestone, 200 years since the city’s founding! As a public art gallery rooted in the heart of downtown, the Ottawa Art Gallery is proud to play an active role in the Ottawa 200 celebrations, using art as a powerful way to reflect on our past, engage with the present, and together, imagine the future.
For two centuries, Ottawa has been shaped by creativity, resilience, and diverse voices. Artists have helped define how we understand this place, its landscapes, neighbourhoods, stories, and communities. As the city comes together to recognize Ottawa 200, OAG’s involvement centres on amplifying those voices and creating inclusive, meaningful cultural experiences that invite everyone to participate while also engaging with our history.
200+: Culture to the Core
For this landmark year, the OAG is excited to be leading initiatives that bring art beyond our walls.
We proudly introduce 200+: Culture to the Core, a yearlong celebration of arts and cultural activations in the downtown core, the heart of Ottawa. By collaborating with local artists, cultural partners and the City of Ottawa, we are animating Ottawa 200 with creative moments that spark curiosity, conversation, and shared celebration.
It’s a cultural takeover featuring exciting exhibitions, activities, events, and cultural activations, exploring what 200 years of Ottawa means today while recognizing the history of this land that extends well past 200 years.
What’s in a +? Recognizing the History of this Land
While 2026 marks 200 years of Ottawa, the “+” invites us to look beyond that milestone. It recognizes the deep histories of this land that long predate the city’s founding and affirms the ongoing presence and cultural leadership of Indigenous artists. These stories reach far beyond 200 years and continue to shape this place today.
A Year Long Cultural Celebration
200+: Culture to the Core recognizes Ottawa as a dynamic, creative capital, while underscoring the power of partnership in shaping its cultural future. This celebration will bring together shared vision, diverse voices, and bold creative ambition to mark Ottawa’s 200th anniversary in meaningful ways.
Through a series of creative projects rolling out throughout the year, creative partnerships will animate public spaces, amplify inclusive storytelling, and create new opportunities for artists and audiences alike. Together, they reflect OAG’s leadership in community-centred cultural development and a collective commitment to artistic excellence.
Stay tuned for upcoming announcements that will reveal new partnerships and creative initiatives shaping Ottawa 200.
Supporting Local Artists and Creative Futures
At the heart of everything we do is a commitment to supporting artists. Ottawa 200 provides a unique platform to highlight the talent, perspectives, and leadership of artists from this region. Through commissions, exhibitions, workshops, and participatory projects, OAG is creating opportunities for artists to contribute meaningfully to this historic moment.
Looking forward, these initiatives are not just about marking an anniversary, they start a conversation about investing in Ottawa’s cultural future. By strengthening relationships, fostering collaboration, and engaging new audiences, we are helping to ensure that art and culture continue to thrive in the city for generations to come.
