« [L’exposition est en quelque sorte] le point culminant de ma carrière — longue de quarante ans — de conteur photographique, et incorpore de nouvelles technologies. Je cherche à explorer mon archive personnelle d’œuvres et de recherches afin de créer ce que j’appelle des histoires post-réserve. » — Jeff Thomas (Rolfe 2023)
Dans cette exposition, nous explorons les pratiques critiques et créatives de Jeff Thomas, photographe, commissaire, militant et théoricien culturel Iroquois Urbain. Nous nous pencherons sur son processus artistique et explorerons la façon dont les épreuves d’artistes, les archives et une toute nouvelle série, Dream Panels [Panneaux oniriques], reflètent la marque de création de Thomas quant à son expérience sur ce territoire — sans égard aux désignations gouvernementales —, une création qui se fait dans la résistance, la réflexion et l’activisme.
Dans les années 1980, Thomas se met à produire des œuvres d’art qui ripostent contre l’exclusion des histoires, des expériences, des souverainetés et des origines autochtones dans des lieux urbains comme sa ville natale de Buffalo, dans l’État de New York. Ses premières œuvres comprennent des photographies de rue et des portraits de son fils, Bear. Thomas commence à schématiser la relation qui existe entre l’effacement et la continuité du savoir autochtone en élaborant des récits complexes qui recontextualisent des tirages d’archives réalisés par des photographes coloniaux comme Edward S. Curtis et William James Topley.
L’ampleur et la portée de l’œuvre de Thomas reflètent sa curiosité générative et l’interdépendance qu’il perçoit dans le lieu et le temps. Dans ses Dream Panels [Panneaux oniriques], il revient sur ses 40 ans de création artistique et examine ses principales préoccupations. Ces panneaux révèlent que les thèmes de la masculinité autochtone, du handicap, de la paternité et des relations entre la terre, ses ancêtres et sa famille demeurent au cœur de sa pratique rigoureuse.
Le Musée des beaux-arts du Canada (MBAC) et la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa (GAO) ont noué un partenariat unique qui soutient l’agentivité, l’autodétermination et la souveraineté culturelle d’artistes, de productions culturelles et de communautés autochtones.
