Camp Artists & Workshops

WEEK 3: July 25-29

Sarah-Mecca Abdourahman

Sarah-Mecca Abdourahman is an emerging Somali-Indian multidisciplinary artist based in Ottawa and Montreal. Her art practice involves both mixed media painting and video art. Through the re-working of family photo albums, Abdourahman’s work addresses her cultural history, using her art practice as a means to connect with her heritage. Through this process, she explores concepts of migration, familial history, and discrimination. In 2020, Abdourahman received a BFA from Concordia University in Studio Arts. She has designed murals for the Vanier Community Service Centre in Ottawa as well as Lansdowne Park in the Glebe. In addition, her video work has been featured in the CBC Arts Documentary Series: Exhibitionists. In 2021, her collaborative mural work was displayed in a group exhibition titled “Filtered” at the Ottawa Art Gallery. In 2022, she exhibited at Wallack Galleries and Institut National Art Contemporain.

About the workshop:
Campers will participate in a mixed media workshop about the nostalgia and memories we hold to the objects in our homes. We will tell our stories with the collective use of collage, painting, and drawing.

WEEK 4 : August 8-12

Ayesh Kanani

Ayesh Kanani is a Ceramic artist with a focus on geometric patterns and surface transformation. Kanani is skilled in a wide range of techniques that include wheel throwing, handbuilding, pinched forms, carving, appliques, and hand painting. They enjoy teaching and sharing clay knowledge to build an understanding of the material and its value. Kanani has taught workshops at Possible Worlds, BEING studio, and the OAG and has been a member at Loam, Gladstone Clayworks Co-op, and Studio Space Ottawa. They currently have a shared studio space where they create work for exhibitions and an online shop under the name Kanani Pots. Kanani has exhibited work in 2021 at Possible Worlds and Dust Evans Gallery earlier this year.

Slip, Score, Repeat
In this workshop you will learn all about clay and creating strong 3-dimensional forms. We’ll focus on handbuilding techniques to shape and create clay pots. You’ll get step-by-step instructions on how to build a slab form, how to join clay and seal it to make a perfect surface. We’ll explore geometric repeating shapes and you can develop your own patterns. You’ll also get a chance to use different tools, create textures, and try out techniques to customize your design.
