Job Description:
The Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) is seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong interest in museum collections and technician work to join the OAG team as a Collections and Technician Assistant.
This is a paid internship opportunity offered through the Young Canada Works program. Please see the requirements below.
Working under the mentorship, training and supervision of the Collections and Building Manager and the Head Preparator, the Collections and Technician Assistant will support duties relating to the collections department, including:
– Assisting with exhibition de-installation and installation of our main galleries, commercial gallery, and public spaces. Tasks include art handling, artwork/object installation, painting, building of display mounts, matting and framing, condition reporting and wrapping artwork/objects for shipping;
– Assisting with the storage revitalization project by moving the commercial gallery storage artwork out of the vault (handling, wrapping, and transporting) and into a different onsite location. Increasing storage of current permanent collection’s storage by identifying ways to increase space by moving works to new locations and building new storage mounts/containers.
– Liaising with the Collections Manager to complete administrative needs on acquisitions intake such as: condition reporting, drafting agreements, identifying ideal storage requirements, and updating collection information systems.
– Support with the completion of yearly collections inventory.
– Assisting with the day-to-day administrative tasks relating to caring for the collection;
– Using collections information system (Axiell) to create and edit records.
Necessary qualifications for the position:
– Fluently English;
– Completed a post-secondary education in museum studies, or an equivalent field;
– Experience handling artifacts/artwork;
– An interest in knowledge of museums and care of collections;
– Ability to work independently as well as within teams;
– Organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment with close attention to detail;
– Proficient using MS Office Products to include Word, Excel, etc..
Requirements
Funded in part through the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage (YCW-BCH) program, Candidate Eligibility is stipulated by Young Canada Works Grant guidelines. You are eligible for this internship if you:
– are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
– are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
– are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
– are a college or university graduate (certificate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate).
Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs and that are unemployed or underemployed.
WAGE CONDITIONS: 35 hrs/week
$22.00 per hour.
