Who encourages you? Is there someone you root for? Seated here is Mrs. W. L. Davis, who, along with her husband William, was a great benefactor of the artist, Albert H. Robinson. Thirty-three years before this portrait was completed, the Davises took notice of Robinson’s talent, found him a studio in Montreal, and introduced him to many important figures in Canadian art. A founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters and one of the youngest members to ever be elected to the Royal Canadian Academy, this Hamilton-born artist was known for getting down to the essentials, reducing detail to focus on color.
