CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION
A cartographic grid of the map of the world on a white background within a bold rectangular border with the underlined text [MAPPA MUNDI] in the top left. The paper is mounted beneath heavy Plexiglas. This piece references a historical mapping system and sense of place. “Mappa Mundi” is the Latin term for schematic mediaeval European maps of the world. Far from geographically accurate, these maps were instead used as teaching tools and illustrated a range of symbolism from flora and fauna to mythological, religious and historical reference points.
