Moving Towards the Light

Paula Murray

BIRTH YEAR 1958
BIRTH PLACE Ottawa, Ontario

Which way do you see this installation: running from left to right or right to left? Paula Murray’s work Moving Towards the Light reflects her interest in the progress of the soul. Seven white porcelain bowls presented in a line tell a story of metamorphosis, the fragility of the human condition, and a response to stress. Murray, a Gatineau-based ceramic artist, collaborates with the energy that reshapes the symmetrical surfaces of the bowls during their making, creating a series that represents the twin natures of our physical and spiritual beings. The transformation in the piece, which is dependent on the viewer’s perspective, can be read from either end.
