Emergent is a showcase of recent and new work by the 2020 graduates of the University of Ottawa’s Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) Program. Working in a variety of mediums and across diverse disciplines, the exhibition highlights the work and unique practices of these five artists.
In their works, artists Julie Caissie, Carol Howard Donati, and Martin Godin each excavate the materiality and exchanges that connect us to and reveal our coexistence with nature and place. Artists Nic Cooper and Zainab Hussain also each perform an excavation, but this time into memory and myth; exploring how this affects the construction of both collective and personal identity. Common across all their bodies of work, the artists expose interwoven markers of identity, and look at our social and ecological interdependencies in their distinct and individual way.
Presented in partnership with the University of Ottawa, Department of Visual Arts and with the support of the RBC Foundation.
