OAG Exhibition A Family Palette at the RiverBrink Art Museum!

August 3, 2023

OAG’s exhibition A Family Palette, showcasing the works of Frances-Anne Johnston, Franz Johnston and Franklin Arbuckle, travelled from the OAG to the RiverBrink Art Museum in Queenston, Ontario! (on view: April 21 – August 19, 2023)

Frances-Anne Johnston, Arrangement in Blue and Green, n.d., oil on canvas board, 60.9 x 45.8 cm. Collection of The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Gift of Richardson Greenshields of Canada Ltd., 1984, 1984JF88. Photo: Lesli Michaelis. Reproduced courtesy of the Estate.

Queenston is in the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. It offers sweeping views of the Niagara River, vineyards, and the historical site of the Battle of Queenston Heights.

The RiverBrink Art Museum, in the heart of the village of Queenston, is a historic Georgian-style building that used to be the country home of art collector Samuel Weir, who purchased the property in 1943. Following his death, the building was converted into a museum and has been open to the public since 1983. The interior galleries retain their original wood paneling, fireplace, and pieces of furniture.

The intimate feel highlighted the exhibition, which focuses on the interiors and still lifes of Frances-Anne Johnston and an artistic practice immersed within the home. The fireplace and chairs (Weir’s former living room) mirrored the work we hung above it!

In an upstairs room of the gallery (a former bedroom), we re-created Frances-Anne’s Johnston’s studio. It is warm and comfortable, and a treasure of a display!

A big thanks to Debra Antoncic, Asta McCannand staff at the RiverBrink Art Museum for hosting the exhibition A Family Palette, and welcoming the OAG to Queenston!

The exhibition will soon travel to the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery in Sarnia (on view: October 6, 2023 – March 17, 2024).

This project has been made possible in part by the Government of Canada.
