As we begin to embrace the warmth of the season, we find ourselves at an inflection point. Beyond the promise of changing weather, we are confronted with significant economic and existential challenges, particularly from the south. With U.S. institutions such as the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the National Endowment for the Arts facing significant staff layoffs and budget cuts, it’s an important time for reflection. Culture, in all its forms, cannot be taken for granted. The arts provide us with a potent space to engage with diverse perspectives, to foster emotional empathy, and to inspire collective action and hope.

In Canada, we are fortunate to be part of a cultural exchange rooted in reciprocity and respect—values demonstrated by the Indigenous peoples of this land since time immemorial. This spirit of mutual respect enriches and inspires us in ways that transcend the transactional nature of many other aspects of life.

This spring, we are excited to showcase a range of exhibitions that reflect this deep connection to culture, creativity, and community. We are proud to present the work of Normee Ekoomiak, whose art powerfully reflects the cultural significance of textile traditions in Inuit communities. This exhibition is complemented by Revival: Printmaking in Nunavik (2014-2019), a compelling showcase from the Avataq Cultural Institute, dedicated to preserving and celebrating culture through the art of printmaking.

In addition, Grotto: The Bill Staubi Collection honors Bill Staubi’s unwavering support for queer artists and his longstanding commitment to Ottawa’s contemporary art scene.

As we approach Mental Health Awareness Month and National AccessAbility Week in May, we remain committed to showcasing the vital role the arts play in fostering well-being. We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Radical Connections and The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre for our annual Creative Space vernissage, a celebration of how creativity can empower and heal. We are also proud to announce that the OAG is the first public art gallery to receive the Rick Hansen Gold Certificate for Accessibility, a significant step in making the arts more inclusive for all.

And don’t forget—join us for the art party of the year at the OAG’s Annual Give to Get Art Auction on May 29. This exciting event will feature works by talented local artists, a chance to bid on unique pieces, and a fabulous after-party to top off an unforgettable evening.

Thank you for being a part of our community, and for supporting the arts that inspire, connect, and uplift us all.
