OTTAWA, ON, JANUARY 30, 2018 – The Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) Expansion is set to open this spring with a spectacular exhibition showcasing the region’s rich art history. The inauguration, which will take place on Saturday, April 28th 2018, will mark OAG’s 30th anniversary. It will also celebrate Àdisòkàmagan / Nous connaître un peu nous-mêmes / We’ll all become stories, a landmark exhibition of unparalleled scale honoring over 6500 years of art making in Ottawa-Gatineau. A major cultural investment, the completion of the Ottawa Art Gallery Expansion is a significant moment for Ottawa’s cultural landscape and the artistic community. The new building will span five floors of programmable space and turn its face to the city as the new center for culture. The OAG Expansion includes a dedicated gallery for the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art, a permanent collection gallery; changing galleries for historical, contemporary and touring exhibitions; rooftop terraces, a multipurpose room; an art studio; a café and a shop; as well as provide a barrier free environment.
“After many years of hard work, we are nearing the end of a journey and I wish to thank all that have contributed to the Ottawa Art Gallery Expansion. We are very much looking forward to the opening the OAG Expansion this April and welcoming artists, partners, Ottawa and the world.”
-Alexandra Badzak, Ottawa Art Gallery Director and CEO
Accompanied by an over 300-page catalogue, the inaugural exhibition (on view from April 28, 2018 to September 16, 2018) tells the story of artmaking in the region from various perspectives and will include 193 historical and contemporary works of art by 181 artists.
