Have you seen OAG’s latest public art piece? On June 20th, 2024 OAG officially unveiled the largest mural ever created by Ottawa artist EEPMON on the Les Suites parking garage, facing the OAG on Daly Avenue. Some waves carry communications, some move us across the ocean, and others travel at the speed of light. Chaos Bloom – Tidal Wave invites passersby—whether tourists, neighbours, or OAG visitors—to immerse themselves in a wave of beautiful flowers, Fibonacci connections, Earth and lunar rhythms, and mathematical poetry, or in short – the cosmos.

The mural, a co-production of OAG and MASSIVart, has been installed as part of Ottawa’s Arts Corridor, an OAG-led initiative set to rejuvenate downtown Ottawa into a dynamic art and entertainment destination, enhancing the area’s visual and cultural landscape.

On the evening of the unveiling, OAG hosted a panel discussion, in the form of a talk show, on the role of art in downtown revitalization. The discussion, led by OAG Director and CEO Alexandra Badzak, featured panelists Andrew Peck, Executive Director of Downtown Rideau BIA, Philippe Demers, Founder and CEO of MASSIVart, and artist EEPMON.

Andrew Peck was the first guest and set the stage by highlighting the importance of downtown rejuvenation. He spoke of multiple challenges Ottawa is facing, namely the opioid overdose epidemic and the housing crisis, as well as new consumer and worker habits, emphasizing that the Ottawa Arts Corridor will inspire bold new thinking and collaborations to revitalise the city’s core.

Philippe Demers spoke about the power of placemaking and how transforming public spaces brings curiosity, more people, and more activity. He explained that when people want to stay and spend time in a space (and not just pass through), it attracts more public, ultimately changing the economy and social dynamic. Demers also stressed the significance of viewing streets and sidewalks as more than mere transit routes. He highlighted that public art should either resonate with the public or inspire to dream of something greater, rather than pushing away the community.

Artist EEPMON then discussed how his art spans many industries and focuses on education, empowerment, inspiration, and bridging various sectors. He emphasized that public art leverages heritage, craft, the corporate world, and public ecosystems to send a powerful message to the world. The panel wrapped-up with a toast celebrating the new mural and gardens, which had provided the backdrop for the event, marking the beginning of a stunning and colorful transformation of Ottawa’s urban core!
